Dr. Smith is a native of Oregon, and grew up waterskiing the Columbia River, hiking the Gorge, and skiing the slopes of Mt. Hood. He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Oregon, earning his Bachelors Degree in Biology with minors in Chemistry and Philosophy. Traveling to Chicago, he graduated from the Northwestern University School of Medicine, where he met his wife. He completed his internship and residency at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, Washington, where he subsequently served in the academic teaching position of Chief Resident. After working as a staff physician in an intensive care unit, he went on to attain his specialty training in Gastroenterology at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. During his time there, he contributed to research investigating inflammatory bowel disease.
Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, Dr. Smith’s clinical interests include therapeutic endoscopy, hepatology, and inflammatory bowel disease.
Dr. Smith and his wife have chosen to raise their twin children in the Portland area surrounded by extended family and accompanied by a pair of pug dogs.
